This week’s podcast is on How to Get Clients with a Small Audience
Ever have a goal that feels hard to reach?
Janna Carlson can relate.
Janna and her partner Jeremy run a web design agency for business owners that want easy, functional sites. And while they’ve been successful for several years designing websites for all kinds of clients, it was not predictable enough for Janna to quit teaching piano on the side.
Web design businesses rely on a constant pipeline of leads and it can be a lot of work to keep filling it up.
But a couple weeks ago, Janna wrote this on Instagram:
“It’s been my dream to run Studio Rocket full-time since we launched five years ago. Thanks to several key factors—one of the biggest being Lex Roman’s Growthtrackers membership—this day has arrived a lot sooner than I thought it would.”
Janna was able to retire from teaching piano a full year before she thought she could! Super impressive feat! But how did she do it?
Janna Carlson has tapped into a major secret of successful entrepreneurs: to succeed fast, you’ve got to learn fast.
Marketing is not one-size-fits-all. You can either make poorly performing copies of other people’s plays or you can learn how to write your own playbook.
I’ll give you one guess as to which path leads to a sustainable business.
When Janna joined us in Growthtrackers, she was focused on expanding her audience size, increasing lifetime value of clients and making the pipeline more predictable and manageable.
Janna told me her mantra in the program was “just show up” and she did. She took full advantage of live sessions, of tools and of 1:1 support with me. That meant that we could move super fast. Janna laid out possible directions and major unknowns. Together, we were able to turn big swings into small bets. Within 12 weeks, she had booked her studio out with work for several months.
To achieve this, Janna made these winning moves:
👟 Faster learning cycles—she checked in with us weekly about what she was testing, why and what she learned from it. That meant she could spin around a better version faster and get results from it faster.
🎯 Reducing factors at play—Janna cut down unknowns by focusing mainly on audience and message. Hands on plays like partnership chats and email campaigns meant she wasn’t laboring over 15 things to get right the first time.
🧱 Building on what worked—as she saw success from small bets, Janna built more confidently on those learnings. Doubling down on what works rather than having shiny object syndrome is what creates reliability in your lead pipeline.
As business owners, we are constantly navigating the unknown. Those who learn how to handle and move through uncertainty are the ones who reach their goals faster. Janna shows us it’s not only possible but necessary.
If Janna’s story inspires you to move faster towards your goals, you should learn more about how Growthtrackers crack their stay booked formulas.

P.S. The Growth Gym is on hiatus this week but I’ll be back next week and you can stay tuned right here to get notified about it!
